Men's Basketball Halted by Hawks

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College was defeated 91-74 by Roger Williams Tuesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference men's basketball action at Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Colonels fall to an overall record of 5-3 and a conference record of 0-3.

After trailing for the first six minutes of play, James Scali (Newburyport, Mass.) knocked down a corner three to give the Colonels a 13-11 lead, their first of the game. Favour Okeke (East Hartford, Conn.) hit another three to tie the game at 20-20 midway through the first half. Nick Johnson (Athens, Ga.) joined the list of three-point scorers with a long three that put the Colonels on top 29-28 with just over six minutes remaining in the first.

The rest of the half went back and forth while a relentless pace of play from both teams kept the score extremely close until fastbreak layups by Jason Romans (Peabody, Mass.) and Jonathan Joel (Cranston, R.I.) gave Curry a 35-31 advantage. The Hawks battled back into the contest, establishing a 38-37 lead to end the first half.

Back-to-back layups by Lowelle Torres (Vineland, N.J.) and Tommy Mallinson (Wilmington, Mass.) gave the Colonels a 41-38 lead at the onset of the second half. Despite a pair of back-to-back threes from Johnson late in the half, a Hawk scoring run put the game out of reach for the Colonels.

Johnson led the Colonels offensively with 24 points, shooting 9-for-15 from the field including four threes. Romans added 18 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double while Torres finished with 13.

Curry College returns to play on Thursday, December 7th, to take on Fisher in a non-conference home contest beginning at 7:30 p.m.
