Colonels Stopped Short by Hawks in CCC Play

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Curry College Men's Basketball team fell to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Roger Williams University Saturday afternoon, marking the Colonel's first loss in the conference this season. 

With the loss, Curry falls to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in the CCC. With the win at home, Roger Williams advances to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in the conference. 

The contest began with two quick three-pointers from the hosts. Mac Annus and Eli Harris knocked down the pair to put their side up 6-0 within the first minute. Colonel's guard Todd Robinson (Brockton, Mass.) immediately answered, successful on an and-one opportunity following a layup. JayQuan Leonard (Plymouth, Mass.) and Angelo Sardegna (Tampa, Fla.) put the Colonels on top with two more layups. The Hawks took back the lead following a 2-16 point run in under five minutes. 

Both sides went blow for blow through the first half, the Colonels recording 58.6% from the field and the Hawks seeing 52.9% of shots drop in their favor. With double the points from turnovers in favor of RWU, the hawks narrowly came out on top through the first 20 minutes. Score entering the halftime intermission: 44-48 Hawks.

The Roger Williams lead would expand over the first five in the second half, now leading 61-51. Colonel guard JayQuan Leonard would tie the contest at 63 with a fastbreak layup; 12:19 remaining on the clock. Curry gained momentum over the next few minutes with Todd Robinson (Brockton, Mass.) putting his side up 72-67 with under ten left on the clock. The Colonel's lead would slip and swing in favor of the hosts by a margin of eight points, sealing the Hawks' victory.

The Colonels were led by JayQuan Leonard who tallied 25 points with 6 rebounds and 2 steals; Todd Robinson Jr. marked 15 points in the loss as both Angelo Sardegna and Frankie Santiago recorded 13 with 4 rebounds each.

The Colonels will head back out on the court Tuesday as they hit the road to take on CCC opponent Salve Regina at 7:30 PM.
