Men's Basketball Tops Western New England

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College men's basketball team earned its first win of the 2021-22 season on Wednesday night by defeating Western New England University 79-75 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.

With the win, Curry improves to 1-5 overall on the season and 1-0 in the CCC. Western New England drops to 2-5 overall and opens up league play at 0-1.

The game went back and forth from start to finish, featuring an astounding 17 ties and 20 lead changes. The game featured a tied score for 8:20, over 20 percent of the contest.

Curry sophomore JayQuan Leonard (Plymouth, Mass.) went off in the win, collecting a game-high 22 points. The total was the highest point total by a Curry player all season. 

Classmates Frankie Santiago (New Britain, Conn.) and Todd Robinson Jr. (Brockton, Mass.) each added 15 points for the Colonels. Santiago's impressive stat line also included seven assists, five steals, and three rebounds.

Western New England was led by sophomore Gavin Greene, who notched a team-high 18 points in the defeat. Senior Kenny Flynn recorded the contest's lone double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.

The victory was the first career head coaching win for Curry men's basketball coach Phil Alibrandi.

Curry will return to action with a road trip to Roger Williams on Saturday. Tip-off from Rhode Island is scheduled for 3 p.m.
