Men's Basketball Bested by Merchant Marine

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Curry College men's basketball team could not hold on against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Sunday afternoon in a 76-69 non-conference loss at the Williams College Purple & Gold Invitational.

With the defeat, Curry continues to seek its first win of the 2021-22 season, moving to 0-5 on the young campaign.

The Colonels came out flying in the opening half, shooting 53.1 percent (17-for-32) from the field in the contest's first 20 minutes, taking a 44-27 lead into halftime. Sophomore Todd Robinson Jr. (Brockton, Mass.) scored 14 points in the half with three 3-pointers to help lift his team to the big lead.

The tables turned in the second half however, as Curry was able to convert just one of its eight 3-point attempts after the break as the Mariners began on the comeback trail. Merchant Marine got 30 of its 49 second half points off the bench, while Curry managed just 25 points from its entire lineup.

Curry led by as many as 20 after an Orlando Ashford II (Sammamish, Wash.) free throw in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Mariners responded with a 33-10 run over the next 12 minutes to take the lead for good.

Robinson Jr. finished as Curry's leading scorer with 16 points and seven boards in the defeat. Junior Angelo Sardegna (Tampa, Fla.) was the only other Colonel in double figures with 10 points.

Curry will be off until after the Thanksgiving break, opening up conference play by hosting Western New England on Wednesday, December 1. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.
