Men's Basketball Can't Keep Up with Salem State

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College men's basketball team fell short to Salem State University by a final score of 86-69 on Wednesday evening in non-conference action at the Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.

With the loss, Curry drops to 0-3 overall on the young season, while Salem State stays perfect at 3-0.

Curry shot lights out in the opening 20 minutes, taking a narrow 48-47 lead into the half. The hosts shot a dazzling 64.3 percent (9-for-14) from three-point land in the half to jump out to the early advantage. Sophomore JayQuan Leonard (Plymouth, Mass.) contributed a team-high 11 points in the first half.

The second half, however, looked starkly different for the Colonels. The offense which had pushed the hosts in front at the break went ice cold in half number two, allowing Salem State to pull away. Curry went 0-for-11 from three and 9-for-35 from the field (25.7 percent) in the second half, as Salem State outscored the Colonels 39-21 to come from behind for the win.

Salem State Josiah Green finished as the contest's leading scorer with 22 points. Right behind him was teammate Sean Bryan with 20.

Four Colonels finished in double figures, led by Leonard with 15. Sophomore Lowelle Torres (Vineland, N.J.) came off the bench to chip in 14 points, while sophomore Frankie Santiago (New Britain, Conn.) and junior Angelo Sardegna (Tampa, Fla.) both added a dozen.

Both teams will travel to Western Massachusetts this weekend to compete in the Williams College Tournament.
