Men's Basketball Stumbles in Final Game of Season

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team was defeated by Endicott College in an 89-67 final on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at MacDonald Gymnasium.

The Gulls concluded the regular season at 18-7 overall (12-4 CCC) and notched their second straight victory. Senior Keith Brown (Pelham, N.H.) led all scorers with 36 points and chipped in 11 rebounds for a double-double. Junior Matt McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) was the only other Gull to score in double figures as he tallied 12 points on four triples.

Four starters registered double-digit scoring outputs for Curry (5-20 overall, 1-15 CCC) led by senior Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) with 18 points on 5-for-12 shooting, including a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Freshman Angelo Sardegna (Lutz, Fla.) finished with 12 points while senior Daymeann Stewart (Milwaukee, Wis.) registered 11. Freshman Michael Ashley (Atlanta, Ga.) pitched in a double-double of 10 points and 16 rebounds.

Endicott raced out to a 13-0 advantage and never looked back as the lead grew to 24 (26-2) after a layup from freshman Jalen Echevarria (Lynn, Mass.). The Gulls' margin increased to as many as 34 in the opening 20 minutes before ending at 32 (48-16) at the break. Endicott limited the Colonels to 20 percent shooting in the first half while the home squad shot at a 47-percent clip.

The margin hung around 30 in the opening five minutes of the second half. A 9-0 Curry spurt trimmed the lead to 23 (58-35) with 13:46 to play in regulation. The Colonels were able to get as close as 18 before closing the contest with a 22-point margin, 89-67.

The loss ends the season for Curry. Endicott earned a bye into the semifinal round of the CCC Tournament which will take place on Thursday, February 27 at MacDonald Gymnasium at a time to be determined later.
