Colonels Notch First Win of Season, Downs UMPI, 61-57

CASTINE, Maine - The Curry College men's basketball team notched its first win of the season as they defeated the University of Maine-Presque Isle 61-57 Friday afternoon on the first day of the Mariner Holiday Classic hosted by Maine Maritime Academy. With the win, the Colonels move to 1-8 on the season while the Owls drop to 5-5 overall.

After a tied score (25-25) at the half Curry would start the second half on a 5-0 run and would grow as lead to as many as eight when Spencer Feng (Keene, N.H.) knocked down a three to make the score 50-42 at the 10:17 mark.

The Owls began to chip away at the lead, trimming the deficit to just one on a layup by Jordan Cook (Saffron Walden, United Kingdom) and then tied the contest at 55 on a made jump shot by Nick Lenhard (Falcon, Colo.) with 3:05 to go in regulation.

With the game knotted at 56, Dashawn Williams (New Haven, Conn.) splashed home a three to put Curry up for good with just 26 seconds remaining. UMPI pulled to within two points with 17 seconds to go in regulation but Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) closed out the scoring in the contest by converting two free throws to give Curry the 61-57 victory.

The Colonels held the edge in shooting percentage (37.3%), three point percentage (35.5%), assists (13), and points off turnovers (21). The Owls won the turnover battle converting one less than Curry (18-17). UMPI also had the advantage inside, outscoring the Colonels 22-12 in the paint. Curry had the edge in bench scoring (23-10).

Williams led the Colonels with 15 points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Luke Schreiner (Breezy Point, N.Y.) added 13 points, four rebounds, and three steals and James Pina (Warwick, R.I.) rounded out the Curry in double-digits in the scoring column with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Derek Healy (Hanover, Mass.) led the Owls 18 points, one rebounds, one steal and one assist, while teammates Cook and Lenhard chipped in with 10 points each. Maurice Harris (Miami, Fla.) led UMPI with seven rebounds. The Colonels outshot the Owls 37.3 percent to 34.5 percent.

Curry returns to the hardwood tomorrow where they are set to battle tournament host Maine Maritime at 2 p.m. UMPI will also be in action Saturday for a noon tip against SUNY Maritime.
