Men's Basketball Falls to Visiting Western New England University 90-61 in Conference Play

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team fell to visiting Western New England, 90-61, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Wednesday evening. The loss drops the Colonels to 0-22 on the season and 0-15 in the conference while the Golden Bears improve to 8-14 overall and 6-9 in the CCC. 

Curry opened the scoring just thirty seconds into the game when junior Paul Preziosi (Quincy, Mass.) hit a layup. The two teams traded scores on either end but WNE continued to separate from the Colonels until the Golden Bears went on an 11-0 run to go up by a score of 20-7 with just over nine minutes to play in the first half.

Junior Trey Jones (Mattapan, Mass.) hit both of his free throws and junior James Pina (Warwick, R.I.) made a layup to bring the lead down to 12 with a score of 27-15 with a little more than five minutes remaining. WNE continued to add to their lead down the stretch and finished the half with a 42-19 advantage.

Pina finished the half scoring the most points (7) on the team while adding a pair of rebounds, an assist and block. Preziosi lead Curry on the glass, pulling down a game second-best six total rebounds.

Freshman Mikey Pettway (Bridgeport, Conn.) led the game scoring 13 points and grabbed a team second-best four boards and team-high four assists.

The second half featured more back and forth action with the Golden Bears repeatedly adding to their lead attaining their biggest of the game (34) in the second half with just over three minutes left to play following a layup from junior Keegan Dudeck (Longmeadow, Mass.) to put the score at 88-54. WNE continued to add on and eventually won with a final score of 90-61.

Pina finished the game scoring the most points with 19 while pulling down four rebounds. Jones finished with 16 and team-highs in rebounds (7) assists (5) and a game-high in steals (4) when it was all said and done. Preziosi also scored double digits with 10 and chipped in with a team second-best six rebounds.

Senior Gerald McDonald (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Pettway both finished with 13 for the Golden Bears with Pettway finishing with a team second-best five total rebounds and led the game with six assists. Junior classmates Daniel Silva (Seekonk, Mass.) and Mike Gelineau (Waltham, Mass.) along with freshman Tyler Johnson (Vernon, Conn.) all finished with nine points and senior Nathaniel Martin (Orange, Mass.) led the game with eight rebounds.

Both teams return to conference action Saturday afternoon as the Colonels travel to Nichols College for a noon start and WNE hosts Eastern Nazarene College for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.
