MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team fell to visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology, 85-71, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Colonels to 0-19 on the season and 0-12 in the conference while the Seahawks improve to 11-8 overall and 9-3 in the CCC.
Wentworth raced out to a 5-0 lead before senior Tim Flanagan (Providence, R.I.) hit back to back three-pointers to put Curry up 6-5 a little over three minutes into the game. The Colonels extended their lead to seven after junior James Pina (Warwick, R.I.) scored their 12th unanswered point to go up by a score of 12-5.
The teams traded baskets but Curry would maintain the lead until sophomore Jason Ganley (Northbridge, Mass.) made a layup with six and a half minutes left in the half to put the score at 22-21. Pina tied the game at 23 shortly after that, but the Leopards retained the lead for the remainder of the half and went to break with a score of 40-25.
Ganley led all scorers and rebounders with 14 first half points and six total rebounds. Junior Dan DaVaux (Wethersfield, Conn.) was right behind him with nine points. Curry was led by Pina who scored 12 and pulled down three rebounds before missing time due to foul trouble. Sophomore Alex Paul (Brooklyn, N.Y.) grabbed a team-best five rebounds and added a couple points.
The Colonels never wavered but were not able to catch up to Wentworth in the second half despite outscoring them in the latter half 46-45. Flanagan scored 20 of his 26 total points in the second half and junior Paul Preziosi (Quincy, Mass.) also put up double digits in the second half, scoring ten.
Flanagan finished with a game-best 26 points, five rebounds and tied another game-best with four assists. Pina followed him with 18 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds as well. Preziosi was right behind Pina and scored 12 total points and chipped in a team second-best six total boards. Paul finished the game with the most rebounds, 8.
Ganley ended up leading the Leopards with 23 points and added a team-best seven rebounds. Sophomore Ben Kizel (Short Hill, N.J.) and DaVaux both scored 15 points and added four and three assists respectively. Senior Ian Therriault (Auburn, Maine) pulled down a team second-best six rebounds.
Both teams return to conference action Tuesday evening as Wentworth hosts Western New England University at 7:30 p.m. while Curry travels to Endicott College for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
