Men's Basketball Drops 83-66 Contest at Conference Opponent Western New England University

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team fell to Western New England University, 83-66, on the road in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Tuesday evening. The loss drops the Colonels to 0-16 on the season and 0-8 in the conference while the Golden Bears improve to 6-9 overall and 4-5 in the CCC.

Freshman Mike Pettway (Bridgeport, Conn.) opened the scoring with a three-pointer to put WNE two minutes into the half. Following a layup from junior Trey Jones (Mattapan, Mass.) to put the score at 2-3, the Golden Bears went on a 16-2 run to put them up by a score of 19-4.

The Colonels responded with their own 6-0 run to bring the score to 19-10. WNE increased their lead to 13 points before freshman Ryan Beatty (Rochester, Mass.) made a layup bringing the score to 23-12. Although the teams traded baskets, the Golden Bears continued to increase their lead and ended the half with a score of 42-25.

Junior James Pina (Warwick, R.I.) led Curry with 10 points while adding four rebounds. He was followed by Jones who finished with six points while grabbing a pair of boards. Sophomore Alex Paul (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the game with seven rebounds. Junior Mike Gelineau (Waltham, Mass.) led the game with 18 first half points while adding a pair of boards. Pettway was right behind him with 10 points while adding a game-high four assists.

Both teams continued to trade baskets in the second half before the Colonels went on an 11-0 run with a little under five minutes to go to cut the score to 73-55 in favor of WNE. Curry finished the game on a 5-0 run to bring the final score to 83-66. Pina led the game with 25 points while finishing with five rebounds and a block. Jones followed with 14 points adding three assists and three steals. Paul led the Colonels with eight rebounds while chipping in four points.

Gelineau led the game with 28 points for the Golden Bears while adding a pair of rebounds. Pettway followed with 14 points while leading the game with eight assists. Sophomore Mike Ryan (Preston, Conn.) led the game with nine rebounds while adding six points.

Both teams return to conference action Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. as WNE hosts the University of New England while Curry hosts Salve Regina University.
