Men's Basketball Tripped up by Visiting Conference Foe Nichols College, 100-60

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team fell to visiting Nichols College 100-60 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon. The Colonels fell to 0-15 on the season and 0-8 in the conference while the Bison improved to 12-3 overall and 6-2 in the CCC.

Despite going down 6-0 to start the game, Curry responded by going on a 7-0 run with freshman Ryan Beatty (Rochester, Mass.) and junior James Pina (Warwick, R.I.) scoring all seven of those points. Right after that, Nichols responded with a 10-0 run of their own to take the lead 16-7 with 15 and a half minutes left in the first half. The Bison continued to increase their lead and obtained a lead of 20 with 11:16 left with a score of 31-11. Nichols further increased their lead and ended the first half up by a score of 60-20.

Freshman Marcos Echevarria (Lynn, Mass.) led the game with 17 points for the Bison while adding three assists. Senior Christian Horton (Rutland, Mass.) and junior Nate Tardy (Moodus, Conn.) both followed closely behind scoring 10 points adding three assists and five rebounds respectively. Pina finished the half scoring eight points and pulled down six total rebounds.

The second half was much of the same with Nichols continuing to advance their lead and eventually working to a 100-60 final score. Echevarria ended up leading the game with 21 points for the Bison and added four rebounds. Tardy recorded a double-double, scoring 13 and grabbing 11 boards. Senior Gustave Koumare (Harlem, N.Y.) recorded a team-best eight rebounds while scoring 12.

Pina led the Colonels, also recording a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while freshman Luke Schreiner (Breezy Point, N.Y.) came off the bench and finished with a team second-best 10 points. Junior Trey Jones (Mattapan, Mass.) and freshman Rael Handy (North Easton, Mass.) both scored nine points while Jones pulled six rebounds.

Both teams return to conference action Tuesday evening as Nichols hosts Salve Regina University for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off while Curry travels to Western New England University for a 5:30 p.m. start.
