Men's Basketball Edged by Visiting MIT, 69-62, in Non-Conference Play

MILTON, Mass. – Visiting M.I.T. built a 17-point second-half lead, then held off a late Curry rally, en route to a 69-62 non-conference win in  men's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Milton. The Engineers improved to 3-1 overall, while the Colonels fell to 0-3 on the season.

The Engineers claimed their largest lead of the first period (30-17) with 6:09 on the clock after junior Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) sank a pair from the charity stripe. Freshman Stephen O' Neal (Roxbury, Mass.) and junior Antonio Jones (Dorchester, Mass.) combined for nine points at the end of the first frame, helping trim the deficit to eight (36-28) entering intermission.

Junior Andrew Acker (Merion Station, Pa.) gave M.I.T. its biggest lead of the day (45-28) after sinking a layup with 17:29 left in the second frame. Jones accounted for nine second-half points, including a completed three-point play with 30 seconds left in the game, bringing the Colonels within five (65-60), but Curry was unable to complete the comeback attempt as the Engineers converted on four of eight free throw attempts from the line.

Redfield recorded a double-double with game highs in points (27), rebounds (13) and blocks (5), while sophomore Justin Pedley (Kennewick, Wash.) added 21 points.

Jones led the Colonels with 16 points and five rebounds. Freshman Rodney Beldo (Dorchester, Mass.) and senior Lambros Papalambros (Quincy, Mass.) added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Junior Matt Russell (South Portland, Maine) pulled down a team-best six boards.

Both teams return to non-conference action on the road on Tuesday, as M.I.T. visits Tufts University at 7:00 p.m., while Curry faces off at Williams for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
