Men's Basketball Knocked Off 64-55 By Visiting CCC Rival Gordon
December 3, 2011
MILTON, Mass. – Gordon College took the lead for good mid-way through the first half as Curry College fell to its visiting Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) rival, 64-55. The Colonels slipped to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in conference action, while the Fighting Scots improved to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in CCC play.
Curry took its biggest lead (13-6) with 13:11 left in the first period after senior Michael Connery (Narragansett, R.I.) sank a shot from beyond the arc. A layup by freshman Hans Miersma (Whitinsville, Mass.) with 7:16 remaining in the first frame gave Gordon a 21-20 lead it would never surrender. After the Fighting Scots extended their lead to 12, junior Sedale Jones (Pittsfield, Mass.) made layup to cut the deficit to 10 (32-22) at intermission.
Gordon took its biggest lead of the game (43-29) with 15:46 left in regulation after junior David Dempsey (Wallingford, Conn.) made a layup. Sophomore Lambros Papalambros (Quincy, Mass.) sank a pair from the charity stripe to trim the lead to six (52-46) with seven minutes remaining, but that was the closest Curry would come. The Fighting Scots went on to score 12 of the game’s final 21 points.
Gordon was led by Dempsey with 19 points. Miersma recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Jones led the Colonels with a game-high 20 points, while Connery added 12. Papalambros and senior Andrew Veilleux (Bar Harbor, Maine) pulled down five boards apiece.
Both teams resume play on December 8 at 7:00 p.m. on their home courts, as Curry plays UMass Dartmouth, while Gordon faces Wheelock.
