Men's Basketball Knocked Off 76-56 By Visiting WPI

MILTON, Mass. – Visiting WPI used a 15-0 run midway through the second half to pull away from host Curry, 76-56, in men’s basketball action Tuesday night in Milton. With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-1. The Colonels fall to 1-4.

WPI opened the game on a 9-0 run that began with a layup by senior guard Jeffrey Robinson (Granby, CT) and was capped off with a three-point play by freshman guard David White, Jr. (Worcester, MA). The Colonels responded with a 10-3 run, kicked off with a layup by sophomore guard Eric Gugielmello (Paxton, MA) and finished with a layup by freshman forward Kenny Hull (Somerset, MA) at 11:08 that cut the Curry deficit to two. The final basket of the first period was a jumper by Curry junior forward Andrew Veilleux (Bar Harbor, ME) with 21 seconds remaining that closed the gap to three (34-31) at intermission.

The hosts got as close as they would come at the start of the second frame, after a Michael Worrick (North Grafton, MA) layup pulled the Colonels to within one. Ahead 49-45, the Engineers began their game-clinching run at 10:49 on a layup by junior forward Fernando Perez (Lowell, MA). Three and a half minutes later, after Perez sank a free throw, WPI held an insurmountable 64-45 advantage, and cruised to the 20-point victory.

Senior guard Kyle Nadeau (Webster, MA) and Robinson led WPI with 11 points apiece. Junior center Matt Carr (Somersworth, NH) chipped in with 10. Perez led the Engineers on the glass with a game-high 10 boards.

The Colonels were paced by junior guard Michael Connery (Narragansett, RI) with 11 points. Sophomore center John Durkin (Madison, CT) had a team-high seven rebounds.

WPI resumes play on Thursday, hosting Lasell in a 7:00 p.m. contest. Curry is back in action on Thursday as well, traveling to Lesley for an 8:00 p.m. tilt.
