MBB Falls to #20 Amherst, 87-69, in Non-Conference Action

MILTON, Mass. – Amherst College notched a 52-point first half then cruised to an 87-69 road win at Curry in non-conference men’s basketball action Thursday night in Milton. The 20th-ranked Jeffs improve to 11-3 while the Colonels fall to 7-8.
Amherst connected on 19 of 32 shots (59.4%) from the field in the opening frame, including 7 of 14 from beyond the arc. The visitors held their largest lead, 39-16, at 5:37 of the first after a layup by freshman guard Allen Williamson (Saugus, MA). The Jeffs took a 19-point edge (52-33) into the locker room at halftime.
The second half was more of the same, although Curry closed the gap to 12 on three different occasions, the last coming at 2:14 (79-67) after a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Jarrell Jackson (Brockton, MA). But Amherst went on an 8-2 run to close out the game and account for the 87-69 final.
The Jeffs had four players in double figures, led by sophomore forward David Waller (Tampa, FL) with 20 points. He was followed by senior guard Steven Wheeler (Bloomington, MN) with 19, sophomore forward Jeff Holmes (Saunderstown, RI) with 14 and junior guard Conor Meehan (Meriden, CT) with 10. Holmes led Amherst’s effort on the boards with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Curry was led by Jackson, who scored 19 points, and by senior forward Philippe Jourdain (Cambridge, MA), who contributed 16, and sophomore forward Chris Brown (Milton, MA) who chipped in with 10. Junior forward Michael Worrick (N. Grafton, MA) had a team-best seven rebounds.
Both teams return to action on the road this Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Amherst plays at NESCAC rival Trinity College, while Curry travels to TCCC rival Gordon College.
