
MILTON, Mass. - Curry College defeated Alfred State 30-16 in a non-conference collegiate football game Saturday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field.
With the win, the Colonels improve to an overall record of 2-3 on the season.
Curry jumped out to a hot start with a three-play, 77-yard drive that included a 47-yard pass from Michael Moriarty (Rockland, Mass.) to Wesley Williams (Grafton, Mass.), a 25-yard completion to Matthew Bowen (Mashpee, Mass.), and a five-yard rushing touchdown for Jordan DePina (Rockland, Mass.) that put the home team on top 7-0 in just 1:41 of playtime.
The Colonels tacked on a pair of field goals by Omar Aboutoui (Methuen, Mass.) throughout the first half, including a 25 and 40-yarder, to take a 13-3 lead heading into halftime.
The Colonel offense kept the ball moving in the third quarter, starting with a four-play, 76-yard drive that ended in a 61-yard touchdown pass from Moriarty to Jaden Doman (Piscataway, N.J.) to extend the Curry lead to 20-3 with 5:38 remaining in the third.
After an Alfred touchdown cut the home team's lead to 11, the Colonels' offense reasserted control with an impressive six-play, 71-yard drive that ate up 3:25 of the fourth quarter and resulted in a 19-yard touchdown reception to Colin Ridley (Peabody, Mass.). Aboutoui rounded out the contest with a 39-yard field goal to cap off scoring for the Colonels with three minutes remaining in regulation.
Moriarty finished with 232 passing yards, two touchdowns, and 18 rushing yards on three attempts. Montie Quinn (Goose Creek, S.C.) was the leading rusher with 149 yards on 17 attempts including a long of 41. Bowen led the Curry receivers with four catches for 70 yards including a long of 32.
On the defensive side of the ball, Pete Jurovich III (Winthrop, Mass.) led the Colonels with 11 total tackles including two sacks for a loss of 24 total yards. Dominic Baez (Danvers, Mass.) also had two sacks, including a strip sack that forced a fumble which he recovered while finishing with six total tackles. Albert Pujols also nabbed an interception which he returned for 25 yards.
Curry College begins Conference of New England play next Saturday, October 19th, with a road matchup against Western New England University beginning at 1 p.m.
