Colonels Fall to UNE in CCC Opener

BIDDEFORD, Maine - Curry College Football was defeated by Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent University of New England 37-21 on the road Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Curry falls to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in the CCC.

The first quarter of the conference bout saw the hosting Nor'easters take a one-score lead over the visiting Colonels. A 10-yard pass to Shane LaPorte pushed UNE in front, however, a missed extra-point would hold the Nor'easters at six.

Curry marked their first score of the afternoon just under five minutes into the second quarter. Freshman Montie Quinn (Goose Creek, S.C.) capped a six-play, 56-yard drive with a 28-yard rush up the middle to score. With a successful Billy Lynch (Mansfield, Mass.) extra-point, the Colonels would lead by one with 10:43 remaining in the half.

UNE would tally two more scores in the second quarter to take a lead heading into halftime. A Jack Mahoney two-yard rushing touchdown and a Mikey Brennan 6-yard receiving touchdown brought the score to 20-7 in favor of the hosts.

The Colonels marked their second touchdown of the conference battle following a snap over the head of UNE's punter. Curry College sophomore defensive back Cam Cruz (Bristol, Conn.) would dive onto the loose ball in the endzone to close in on the Nor'easter's lead.

UNE would answer back just 42 seconds later, Mikey Brennan marking his second receiving touchdown on the day, this time for 71-yards and to put UNE in the lead 27-14. Following a Curry College three-and-out, UNE would tally another touchdown to their total; AJ DeFilio was credited with the 27-yard reception.

A 21-yard field goal by the hosting Nor'easters set their final score at 37.

Curry's Montie Quinn would mark another touchdown on the afternoon, capping off a five-play, 39-yard drive with a two-yard rushing touchdown with just under two minutes remaining in regulation. The final Quinn score would not be enough to catch the UNE lead as the hosts would take the contest by a final score of 37-21.

The Colonels were led by Montie Quinn who marked two touchdowns and 60 yards on 14 attempts. Curry's Maxx Bell (Auburn, Maine) recorded 95 yards with a 46-yard reception. Curry's starting quarterback, Justin Mullaney (Danvers, Mass.) went 18-28 through the air for 172 yards.

Curry's Bailey Smith (Wilmington, Mass.) paced the defense, marking 11 total tackles (10 solo) in the loss on the road.

The Colonels return to the field next Saturday as they host CCC opponent Salve Regina on Katz Field at 1 PM.
