Colonels Fall in Hard Fought Battle Against UNE in Final Game of Season

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College football team fell to conference opponent University of New England Saturday afternoon in their final game of the season. The contest was scored 55-43 in favor of the visiting Nor'Easters.

The Colonels opened scoring quickly capitalizing on a four-play, 67-yard drive for a score just three minutes into play. A 26-yard pass from Charlie Stanton (Melrose, Mass.) arrived safely in the hands of Miles Cogdell (Hamden, Conn.) to give the Colonels an early lead. UNE answered back just as quickly and tied up the ball game three minutes later driving down the field 78 yards capped off with a 39-yard completion to Brett Miller (North Conway, N.H.) from Jarrett Henault (Goffstown, N.H.). The Colonels methodically work up the field after the UNE touchdown and gather themselves for another score, this time completion to Gabe DeSouza (Everett, Mass.) from Charlie Stanton, capping off an 11-play, 74-yard drive in four minutes. Nor'Easters kick returner Jack Mahoney (Hudson, N.H.) took the next score by himself, returning a kick-off 94 yards, once again tieing the contest up. The score after the first quarter: 14-14.

UNE was the first to score in the second quarter. Quarterback Jarett Henault rushed for a touchdown to cap off their 8-play drive. Nor'Easters extra point attempt was no good, leaving the Colonels with an opportunity to take the lead with a score. Unfortunately, UNE furthered their lead five minutes later with a touchdown from Shane LaPorte (Southington, Conn.). The Nor'Easters continue their scoring run with another touchdown from senior wide receiver Brett Miller. UNE now leads 34-14 with 7:30 left in the first half. The Colonels zip down the field in four plays, tallying a touchdown, this time by Gabe DeSouza (Everett, Mass.). The University of New England scores once more before heading into the half. Jack Mahoney records his second touchdown of the contest with a 22-yard pass from Jarrett Henault. The Nor'Easters lead 40-21 heading into the half.

Neither team was able to score in the third quarter of this afternoon's game. A slew of three-and-outs kept both sides occupied.

The Colonels were first to strike in the fourth quarter. Gabe DeSouza catches his third touchdown pass on the day. The 3-yard pass from Charlie Stanton and successful conversion from Stanton close the UNE lead to 40-29. UNE answers three minutes later with a Jakob Rivers (Dracut, Mass.) touchdown off of a 27-yard pass from Jarrett Henault. In one play, following a turnover on downs from the Colonels, UNE runningback Jack Mahoney finds his way to the endzone increasing the lead, now 55-29 with just under 10 left on the clock. The Colonels score after a drive lasting under two minutes with Gabe DeSouza's fourth score of the contest, receiving a 2-yard pass from Charlie Stanton. With a successful conversion, the Colonels now only trail 55-37. The Curry defense is able to force UNE to punt the ball away with six minutes left on the clock. The Colonels push forth for another score, Stanton rushing two yards to cap a 63-yard drive. The Colonels force UNE to punt again, now trailing by 12. Curry manages to find themselves at the UNE 8-yard line wherein a last-ditch effort, Stanton's pass is intercepted by Keegan Stanton (Portland, M.E.) sealing the victory for the visiting Nor'Easters.

Curry's Stanton completed 42 of 71 passes for 550 yards, 5 TD.

The Colonel's top receiver was DeSouza, who recorded 158 yards with 4 TD.

Nyamwaya paced Curry's defense with 16 tackles, 3 solo.
