SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Curry College Football Team absorbed a 38-27 loss at NEFC rival Western New England University on Saturday afternoon in Springfield. The Golden Bears improve to 3-5 overall and the Colonels fall to 2-5 on the season, while both teams now standat 2-3 in the league standings.

Curry got on the board first, when Tyran Harrigan hauled in a 23 yard pass from Kevin Fruwirth at 4:16 of the first quarter. It capped a nine-play, 84-yard drive that took just under three minutes.

The Colonels extended their advantage to 14-0 with 24 seconds left in the opening frame. This time, the scoring pass was a school-record 91-yard connection from Fruwirth to Brett Kane.

Western New England responded by scoring 24 points in the second quarter, and took a 24-14 advantage into the break.

The Golden Bears extended their lead to 31-14 early in the third quarter. But on its next possession, Curry marched down the field 75 yards on seven plays, and pulled to within 31-20 after Jordan Shairs collected an 11-yard touchdown toss.

The hosts opened up a 38-20 lead with a touchdown on their next drive. The visitors then closed out the scoring with 3:14 remaining in the contest thanks to a 1-yard touchdown run by Phil Bigelow.

Fruwirth went 29 of 57 for 390 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Bigelow rushed 18 times for 94 yards. Kane had six catches for 168 yards, while Harrigan made six receptions as well for 114 yards.

The Colonels' defense was led by freshman Jean Charles, with 16 total tackles (6 solo), including three tackles for loss (-10 yards). Five additional Curry players hit double figures in tackles, including Jeff Claffey (12),  Jose Rodriguez (11),  Stanley Sainterlien (10), and  Jeff Janoski (10).

Next Saturday, Curry returns home to face Nichols College in a 1:00 p.m. contest on Senior Day.
