Baseball Edged Out by Dean in Close Contest

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College was defeated 11-9 by Dean College Thursday afternoon in a non-conference collegiate baseball game at Jack Valley Baseball Diamond. The Colonels fall to an overall record of 5-25 while remaining 0-9 in conference play.

The Colonels wasted no time, jumping on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Brett Heggs (Taunton, Mass.) started things by crushing a double deep to the fence in left-center field. Tommy Marshall (Hanson, Mass.) slapped an RBI single on the next at-bat to score the first Colonel run.

Back-to-back singles and a throwing error put runners at second and third in the bottom of the third inning. Marshall hit a double off the wall in center field to score a run and tie the game at two. On the ensuing at-bat, Kyle Doolin (Stoughton, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs with another double to right-center field to give Curry a 4-2 lead. A third double, this time to left field by Tino Gagliardi (Cromwell, Conn.) scored another run for the Colonels, while Brandon Polanco (Brownsville, N.Y.) kept the streak going with a fourth straight double, ending the inning with the home team on top 6-2.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, Polanco hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score a run from third and tie the game at 7-7. A walk loaded the bases again for the Colonels, allowing Grove to drive in a run after getting hit by a pitch, giving Curry an 8-7 lead.

After a four-run top of the eight from Dean, back-to-back singles by Cam Barry (Manchester, Conn.) and Polanco, followed by a throwing error, put runners at first and second in the bottom of the inning. A wild pitch later in the inning allowed Barry to score from third, cutting the Bulldogs lead to two (11-9).

Curry College returns to action on Saturday, April 27th, with a road doubleheader against Suffolk beginning at 12 p.m.
