MILTON, MA - The Curry College Baseball team split a doubleheader against Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Suffolk University Saturday afternoon in their conference opener on Jack Vallely Diamond.
With the split, Curry continues at 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the CCC.
Game 1 - Curry 7, Suffolk 6 (11 Inn.)
The Colonels put runs on the board first, senior first baseman Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) blasting a solo home-run over the left-field wall to put Curry up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
The visiting Rams would tie the contest in the top of the second and then take a one-run lead in the top of the third with a solo home-run from sophomore Garet Roberts.
Curry graduate third baseman Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) granted the Colonels the lead yet again with a grand slam to left field, tallying four more runs to the Colonel's total.
Suffolk continued to add the pressure to the hosts, marking three runs in the top of the third and one in the top of the fourth to again tie up the contest. An error from Curry's Leonard at first base in the top of the sixth prompted a score from the visiting Rams to give Suffolk a one-run lead heading into the seventh inning.
Curry's Jason Leonard would redeem his error in the previous inning by scoring the tying run in the bottom of the seventh following a wild pitch from Garet Roberts. With the score tied at six apiece, the two sides would play for two extra innings to determine a winner.
A sacrifice fly to right field from Joan Peralta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to bat in Jason Leonard would seal the contest for the Colonels in their conference opener on Vallely Diamond Saturday afternoon.
Curry was paced by Jared Keller (3-for-4, 4 RBI, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 2B) and Jason Leonard (2-for-4, 4 R, 1 HR, 1 3B, 1 RBI).
Curry's Colman Dyer (Sterling, Mass.) was credited with the win marking two innings pitched with just one hit.
Game 2 - Curry 2, Suffolk 8
Two doubles and a two-run homer in the top of the first granted the Rams an early lead in the second matchup of the afternoon conference doubleheader.
The Colonels first tallied a run as Joan Peralta batted in Brett Heggs (Taunton, Mass.) on a double sent to left field in the bottom of the first.
An additional two-run shot over the center-field wall from Rams left fielder Marc Birbiglia granted Suffolk a five-run lead in the top of the fifth.
Garett Fosher (Exeter, N.H.) scored the Colonel's final run of the afternoon on an error by the Rams' second baseman. Two RBI singles in the top of the seventh sealed the victory for Suffolk University on Vallely Diamond by a final score of 8-2.
The Colonels get back out on the field Monday (3/28) as they host the Worcester State University Lancers on Vallely Diamond at 3 PM.
