MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team rallied for a split against Western New England University on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play at the Jack Vallely Diamond. The Golden Bears captured the first game, 7-2 while the Colonels topped the Golden Bears in a shootout, 16-15, in the nightcap.
Game One – Western New England 7, Curry 2
The Golden Bears were the first to strike in game one when senior Jake Balderston (Hadley, Mass.) grounded out to second, scoring senior Mack Palmer (Princeton Junction, N.J.) in the visitors' half of the first.
The Colonels pulled in front in the next half inning, 2-1. Freshman Joan Peralta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove in junior Julian Jaume (Staten Island, N.Y.) with a double to left field. Two batters later, junior Eric Sennott (Odessa, Fla.) converted a sacrifice fly to right, which scored Peralta.
Western New England would go on to score six unanswered to capture the game by the 7-2 final.
Freshman Ryan Goonan (Raynham, Mass.) led Curry at the dish with two hits.
Game Two – Curry 16, Western New England 15
The teams combined for 31 runs and 33 hits in the nightcap.
Jaume and Peralta each had three hits while junior Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) hit a home run.
The Colonels scored runs in five different innings and the lead changed four times.
Leading 16-13 heading into the ninth, Western New England made one final push to knot the contest again. Junior Ben Harrison (Newtown, Conn.) hit a two-run shot to center field to cut the deficit to one, 16-15. The Golden Bears would leave the bases loaded and Curry came away with the one-run victory.
Curry (4-18 overall, 2-14 overall) and Western New England (6-9-1 overall, 5-8-1 CCC) will play one final time to close the regular season. The contest will take place on Wednesday, April 28 at 3:00 p.m. at Curry.
