Baseball Loses Two at Nichols

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team lost two games to Nichols College on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play. The Colonels lost the opener 14-13 and then dropped the nightcap, 7-6, in eight innings.
Game One – Nichols 14, Curry 13
The Colonels led 13-5 after five and a half innings, but Nichols stormed back to put up 12 runs in two innings, including eight in the bottom of the seventh to tie the contest at 13.
With the score headed into the bottom of the ninth, graduate student Jack Arend (Newfields, N.H.) delivered a one-out walk-off homer to right center to give the Bison the 14-13 victory to end the game.
Senior Riley Cronin (East Providence, R.I.) led the way at the dish for Curry. He went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Junior Brendan Duffy (Stratford, Conn.) was credited with the win on the mound for Nichols. He tossed two innings of hitless ball while registering four strikeouts. Junior Ryan Williams (Waltham, Mass.) was given the loss for the Colonels, surrendering one run on two hits.
Game Two – Nichols 7, Curry 6 (8 innings)
Curry was the first to strike in game two following a single to right from sophomore Conor Hanlon (Beverly, Mass.). The base knock scored junior Julian Jaume (State Island, N.Y.). Graduate student Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) chipped in with a single of his own to help plate Hanlon.
The Bison took the lead in the bottom of the first inning, tallying three runs. Graduate student Kyle Bouchard (Fall River, Mass.) grounded into a double play, which allowed Arend to score from third. After a single up the middle from freshman Brennan Hyde (Tampa, Fla.), graduate student Christian Naccari (Ossining, N.Y.) stepped to the dish and launched a two-run shot to left to give Nichols the 3-2 advantage.
The Colonels tied the game in the second on an RBI double to center from freshman Ryan Goonan (Raynham, Mass.). The two-bagger brought around senior Garrett Fosher (Exeter, N.H.).
The Bison came right back with three of their own in the home half of the second to take a 6-3 lead and then Curry tied the contest in seventh when Cronin reached on an error by the Nichols shortstop, which allowed junior Jason Leonard to touch home.
Nichols plated the winning run in the eight when junior DJ Caron (Branford, Conn.) delivered a single to left field to bring around senior Nathaniel Cormier (Sandisfield, Mass.) to give the Bison the 7-6 victory.
Freshman Andrew Croteau (Reading, Mass.) was the winning pitcher in game two. He tossed the final 5.1 innings and gave up one run on three hits to go along with one strikeout. Freshman Zach McCarthy (Plympton, Mass.) was tagged with the loss for Curry.
The two teams will close out its five-game series on Wednesday, April 14 in Dudley. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
