ATLANTA, Ga. – The Curry College baseball team was swept in a doubleheader against host Oglethorpe University on Sunday afternoon in Atlanta. The Stormy Petrels took the first game by a 4-2 score and won the second game, 6-0. Oglethorpe moves to 4-2 on the season while the Colonels dip to 0-3.
Game One
The Stormy Pretels got on the scoring started in the second inning as Oglethorpe took a 1-0 lead. The frame started with the first baserunner as Bobby Rezac (Aiken, S.C) advanced to second on a throwing error by Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.). After a failed pickoff attempt Matt Motz (Milton, Ga.) would score on the throw to gain the early advantage.
In the top of the third Curry would tie the game at one. Jack Kallinich (Madison, Conn.) got the inning started when he singled down the right field line. Alex McLean (Eliot, Maine) drew a walk to put two men on for the Colonels and then Kallinich would eventually score on a passed ball to knot the game up.
The Stormy Pretels reclaimed the lead in the fifth when they tallied three runs. Jarvis Miller (Nashville, Tenn.) scored on a throwing error by Curry pitcher James Mello (Fall River, Mass.). Later in the frame Adrian Celata (Duluth, Ga.) doubled down the left field line to score Austin Ferlita (Odessa, Fla.) and then Celata scored on an RBI single down the left field line by Brandon Fish (Marietta, Ga.).
The Colonels would cut into the lead into the top of the ninth, registering one run. McLean reached on a fielder's choice which scored Mitchell Carvalho (Cranston, R.I.).
Matt Fogarty (Millis, Mass.) was credited with the loss for Curry as the sophomore tossed four and one thirds innings of action. He allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out three and walking five.
Game Two
The contest remained scoreless until the fourth inning before either team could break through.
Fish reached base and then stole second to get in scoring position to start the frame. Celata stole third base and would later score on an error by Nick Crivello (Millville, Mass.) to open the scoring. Later in the inning Corey Hamm singled up the middle to drive in Fish to extend their lead to 2-0. Jacob Rivers and Miller each chipped in RBI hits to close out the scoring in the fourth.
The last runs came in the sixth as Ferlita doubled down the right field line to score Miller and Connor Crooke (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) as the Stormy Pretels would capture the game by a 6-0 final.
McLean led Curry in game two, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Brian Burke (Swampscott, Mass.) was credited with the loss for the Colonels as the senior threw six innings while allowing six runs (four earned), striking out six and walking just one.
Curry will return to the diamond on Mar. 11 when the team travels to Winter Haven, Fla. for their spring break trip. They will open play against Westfield State at 2:30 and 4:30, respectively.
