Baseball Falls 8-1 to Visiting CCC Foe Salve Regina

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College fell to visiting Salve Regina University, 8-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) baseball action Tuesday afternoon in Milton.

With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 16-14 on the season and 6-8 in the conference. Salve will host Johnson & Wales University tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.

The Colonels fall to 15-10 overall and 7-5 in the conference. They are set to host Brandeis University tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. 

The scoring was opened in the top half of the first inning when sophomore Joe Haley (North Kingstown, R.I.) singled to center for the Seahawks, scoring freshman John Militano (Miller Place, N.Y.) who doubled to left prior to Haley's at bat.

Curry responded with a  run of its own in the bottom half with junior John Arens (Milton, Mass.) starting things up with a one out walk. Arens advanced on a wild pitch and would be platted from a single off the bat of junior Phil Perez (West Covina, Calif.) to center field.

In the top half of the third inning, Salve would put another tally on the board with junior Ryan Kelly (Waldwick, N.J.) doubling to center to start the inning. After a strikeout, Haley came up and delivered an RBI single to right field.

The Seahawks would get another run in the fourth inning as sophomore Cory Blankmeyer (Centerport, N.Y.) welcomed senior Tanner Givens (Hamden, Conn.) to the game with a solo home run. After a one-two-three inning defensively, Kelly started things up in the fifth with a single. After advancing on a sacrifice bunt, freshman Alex Perry (No. Attleboro, Mass.) singled him in from second making the score 4-1 after four and a half innings.

Salve would get four more runs in the final inning off sophomore Chris Smith (Scituate, Mass.) After Haley led off with a walk, Perry would join Blankmeyer and hit a home run of his own, this time scoring two. Freshman Christian Vargas (Melbourne, Fla.) plated Blankmeyer again after he singled to right after Perry. Finally, sophomore Hunter Sleeper (Arlington, Mass.) singled to left scoring freshman Connor Sullivan (Lowell, Mass.) who singled as well.

Senior Thomas Fitzpatrick (South Boston, Mass.) took the loss going three full giving up five hits and two earned while striking out five. Givens also went three, giving up two earned on four hits while striking out a pair. Smith gave up four earned in his one inning of work giving up six hits while walking and striking out one each.

Sophomore Cole Tretter (East Lyme, Conn.) started the game for the Seahawks and only went two innings letting up one earned on two hits and walk with three punch outs. Haley was handed the win for his two-inning effort, letting up no hits or runs with one K. Freshman Kyle Lefelar (Potomac, Md.) also pitched for Salve, going one full giving up a single hit and tallied a strikeout. Finally, freshman Tom Seaver (Rocky Hill, Conn.) got the ball for two innings in relief and only struck out one putting the Seahawks at six strikeouts on the day for the staff.
