Baseball Falls 6-3 to Visiting Roger Williams on Day 1 of CCC Tournament
MILTON, Mass. – Fourth-seeded Roger Williams University picked up a 6-3 win over third-seeded Curry College Thursday afternoon on the opening day of the Commonwealth Coast Conference Baseball Tournament at D. Forbes Will Field.

The Hawks took the lead in the first inning when sophomore Mike Pascarella (Milford, CT) scored after freshman Derek Jerome (New Bedford, MA) stroked a single up the middle. One out later, Jerome would score from third base on a single by senior Trevor Manzi (Beverly, MA) to make it 2-0.

In the second and third innings, Roger Williams would score three more runs beginning when senior Tim Georgen (Bristol, CT) scored on an error. With two outs in the third, senior Chris Comeau (Southbury, CT) doubled to left field driving in sophomore Trevor Larson (Northbridge, MA) and junior Matt Swensen (Charlton, MA) to increase the lead to 5-0.

In the fourth frame, the Colonels got on the board scoring three runs, beginning on a single by senior Matt Drew (Waltham, MA) allowing senior Carlos Cornejo (Lake Forest, CA) to score from third. Junior Sam Barron (Florence, MA) would score on a sacrifice bunt by senior David Stevens (Deerfield Beach, FL). Drew also scored on the bunt play to trim the lead to 5-3.

The only other run of the game would come with two outs in the top of the ninth inning when Hawks’ centerfielder Comeau singled to center to score third baseman Swensen from second base to make it 6-3.

Sophomore Tyler Pogmore (Lebanon, CT) would go the distance, pitching nine innings giving up three runs on six hits and walking two while striking out six to improve to 2-3 on the season. Drew would pitch 6 1/3 innings giving up four runs on 11 hits, walking four and striking out six. He would take the loss to fall to 4-3 on the season.

Both teams are back in action in tournament play tomorrow at 3 p.m. as Curry travels to Springfield to face off with top-seeded Western New England, and the Hawks head to Beverly to face off with #2 seed Endicott.
