Baseball Knocked Off by #10 Wheaton, 9-3
NORTON, Mass. – Junior Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass./Norton) went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the No. 10 Wheaton College baseball team to a 9-3 win over Curry College in non-conference action Friday afternoon at Sidell Stadium.
 
Senior Nolan Corr (Somersworth, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) tossed eight innings of three-hit ball as the Lyons won for the fourth time in five games and improved to 18-3 on the season. Freshman Kevin Foley (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) also drove in a pair of runs while classmate Dan Demeo (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) scored three runs.
 
Curry grabbed an early 1-0 lead when sophomore Kyle Connors (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) reached on an error leading off the game and came around to score on an RBI groundout by senior Carlos Cornejo (Lake Forest, Calif./Mater Deli).
 
The Lyons answered with four runs in both the third and fourth innings to take an 8-1 lead. Demeo scored Wheaton’s first run on a fielders choice play before a two-run double by Ryan gave the Lyons a 3-1 lead. Two batters later, Gusovsky singled to center to plate Ryan with the team’s fourth run of the inning.
 
In the fourth, Ryan drove a single to center to bring in Demeo and make it 5-1 Wheaton. Two batters later, De la Cruz drove in a run with an infield grounder, and Foley capped the inning with a two-run single down the left field line to make it 8-1. Demeo tripled to right leading off the fifth and scored on a single by senior Hal Landers (Salem, N.H./Salem) to stretch the lead to 9-1.
 
Cornejo and junior Shayne McDonald (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin) recorded RBI doubles in the ninth before Wheaton freshman Ben Johnson (Cambridge, Mass./Carlbrook School) came on to record the final two outs of the game.
 
Corr allowed one unearned run to go along with one walk and one strikeout over eight to earn his third win of the season. Senior Alex Sammons (Irvine, Calif./University) started for the Colonels (8-13) and worked three innings, allowing three hits and five runs (three earned) with four walks and two strikeouts. The loss drops him to 1-2 on the season.
 
Landers and junior Dan Gusovsky (Andover, Mass./Andover) each finished with two hits for the Lyons. Jensen went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to five games while freshman Apolinar De la Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) went 1-for-5 and has hit safely in 18 of the Lyons 21 games this season.
 
The Lyons head to Western New England for a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow at noon. The Colonels return to action on Tuesday when they head to Bridgewater State for a 3:30 p.m. contest. (Recap courtesy of Wheaton College Sports Information)
