Colonels Take Part in Vs. Cancer 4-Mile Challenge
MILTON, Mass. – Members from the Curry College athletic department including coaches, student-athletes, and staff members took part in the Vs. Cancer 4-Mile Challenge, which ran from mid-September (Childhood Cancer Awareness Month) to the end of October. The team of Colonels ran its four miles on October 18.
With many athletes' seasons being put on hold due to COVID-19, the Vs. Cancer 4-Mile Challenge was a way to raise money and awareness for children battling cancer and to stay connected to their teams. The Challenge aimed to bring awareness to the fact that only 4% of federal cancer research funding is designated to pediatric cancers, with even less going to pediatric brain tumors – the deadliest form of childhood cancer.
Led by Assistant Athletic Director for Communications Chris McKeon, a fellow pediatric brain tumor survivor, the team of Colonels raised over $900. The Challenge collected over $70,000 on an initial goal of $40,000.
"I would like to thank everyone who participated at Curry and beyond," said McKeon, who was a Challenge Leader for the initiative. "Your fundraising dollars and support are much appreciated for a cause that is close to my heart."
Vs. Cancer empowers any sports team, any athlete and any community to help kids with cancer. As a signature fundraising campaign of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, proceeds help fund child life programs in local hospitals and lifesaving pediatric brain tumor research.
