MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College Athletic Department announced its annual award winners for the 2016-17 academic year on Friday at the 48th Annual Awards Recognition Ceremony at the Katz Gymnasium.
Jake Cawlina (Danvers, Mass.) of the football team was named the Male Athlete of the Year. Cawlina capped his Curry career in style, leading all of the Colonel receivers this season with 945 yards and 13 touchdowns. He ranked second in the conference with 105.0 receiving yards per game and was tied for the lead league in touchdown receptions with 13. The senior was named a First Team All-NEFC Selection and an ECAC North First Team Offensive All-Star. Additionally, he was selected to play in the Euro-American Challenge, a postseason All-Star game in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Malorie Knowlton (Norfolk, Mass.) of women's lacrosse was awarded the Female Athlete of the Year honor. Knowlton played in all 17 games, making 17 starts. She led the team and the conference in caused turnovers with 71. Knowlton finished second on the team and tied for third in the conference with 52 ground balls. She tallied 43 goals and dished out seven assists for 50 points, which ranked her second on the team for both points and goals.
Ellery O'Hara (Toronto, Ontario) of the hockey team took home the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year award for the second straight year. His academic accolades include being named at the Commonwealth Coast Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete. O'Hara is a Criminal Justice major who has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA. He has shown leadership on the ice as an assistant captain and he intends to continue his education and will be attending the University of Toronto Law School next year.
Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) was named the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. The junior psychology major currently holds a 3.73 GPA. She is a member of the volleyball and women's basketball teams at Curry. On the volleyball court, she led the team with 60 total blocks (38 solo, 22 assisted). On the basketball court, she averaged 7.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. She has been a three-time Academic All-Conference team selection.
The Colonel Pride awards are given annually to a student-athlete and a supporter of Curry Athletics who exemplifies Colonel Pride. This years' student-athlete award recipient was Mikayla Korona (Bellingham, Mass.) of the softball team. The Colonel Pride award for a supporter was given to women's soccer head coach Jason Tassinari.
