Women's Volleyball Rallies Past Colby-Sawyer

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's volleyball team knocked off Colby-Sawyer College 3-1 Wednesday evening in non-conference action at the Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium. Set scores were 19-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-20.

With the victory, Curry improves to 2-1 overall on the young season.

The Chargers won the opening set on the evening to take a 1-0 lead. The visitors notched seven service aces in the set en route to the early advantage.

Curry bounced back in the second set to level the match. Sophomore Sonja Matheson (Voluntown, Conn.) led the Colonels with three kills in the set, which featured 13 tie scores and seven lead changes.

The hosts never trailed in the third set, going wire-to-wire to take their first lead of the evening. Senior Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) notched a team-high three kills, while freshman setter Emma St. Cyr (Dover, N.H.) recorded a pair of service aces.

The Colonels hit .263 in the fourth and final set with 13 kills and just three errors to close out the victory. Guzman led the way with six kills and no errors on just 10 attempts on her way to a match-high 13 kills. She also finished with 13 digs on the evening.

Matheson finished just a kill shy of a double-double, posting nine kills and 19 digs. Rookie libero Sydney DeCarvalho (Hope, R.I.) chipped in 13 digs, while senior Leah Oscar-Phoenix (Westwood, Mass.) chipped in eight digs, five blocks, and four service aces.

Next up for the Colonels, they will travel to Albertus Magnus on Saturday for a non-conference tri-match with the host Falcons and St. Joseph's (L.I.). First serve versus Albertus is slated for 11 a.m., followed by a 1 p.m. start against St. Joseph's.
