Volleyball Tripped Up at Roger Williams in CCC Play, 3-0

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball cruised to a 3-0 victory over Curry College Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

The win for Roger Williams extends the team's streak to six straight, as well as 6-0 in the all-time series against Curry.

Curry hung in with the Hawks early on in the opening set, taking a quick 3-1 lead on a Kill by Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.). Though RWU would eventually go on top 4-3 on a Lara LoIacono (Lynbrook, N.Y.) ace, Curry would tie the game at three separate points. With the game at seven-all, RWU pulled away from Curry using an 8-3 run to take a 15-10 lead and force a Colonel timeout. The Hawks would go up by as many as seven (18-11) before Curry made a late run to make it a 22-19 game. RWU would score three of the final four points for the 25-20 win.

Roger Williams jumped out to a quick lead in the second set and did not look back. RWU began the game with a 7-2 run capped off by a block by LoIacono and Molly Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.). The Hawks would eventually build the lead to 13-7, leading to a timeout by Curry. The Hawks would continue to press on, coming out with a 6-2 run to force another timeout. RWU would ultimately close out the set with four straight points, logging the 25-14 win.

The final set began similar to the first, with Roger Williams scoring six of the first seven points of the game. Curry would not be deterred, coming back on a 6-2 run to pull within one. However a 6-0 Hawk run aided by three Katie Nugent (Lynnfield, Mass.) kills put a quick end to the rally. Curry would come as close as four (13-17) over the remainder of the match, but the Hawks continued to hold the Colonels off. LoIacono put the match away 25-16 with a kill from the right side.

Quilty led RWU with nine kills along with two block assists. Meghan Chartier (Inverness, Ill.) had 16 digs while Jill McManaman added six kills and a pair of aces. Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) had 15 assists with Emiley Melillo (Seattle, Wash.) adding 12.

Rice and Grace Stafford (West Yarmouth, Mass.) each led Curry with eight kills. Monica Wilkes (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) finished with 16 assists and four digs, with Courtney Carroll (Fairhaven, Mass.) added 11 digs and an ace.

Roger Williams (13-6, 4-0 CCC) hosts UMass-Boston on Friday, while Curry (8-9, 2-4 CCC) faces Salem State on Thursday at home at 6:00 p.m.
