Volleyball Captures First-Ever Win, Defeating Mass. Maritime, 3-1

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Julie Rahilly (Nashua, N.H.) notched 10 kills to lead Wentworth to a pair of 3-0 non-league college volleyball victories over Curry and host Massachusetts Maritime in a tri-match played Saturday afternoon at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center.

Junior Julie Bruton (Montgomery, Tex.) added 15 service aces in the triumphs for the Leopards (7-18), who bested the Colonels (1-13) by game scores of 25-11, 25-10 and 25-18 in their opener before posting a 25-10, 25-8 and 25-13 victory over the host Buccaneers (1-20) in the final match of the day.  Sophomore Rebecca Williams (Brockton, Mass.) chipped in with 25 set assists in the sweep for Wentworth, which also received six service aces from Rahilly against Curry and 10 service aces from freshman Michelle Hobbs (Northwood, N.H.) against Massachusetts Maritime.

Sophomore Caitlin O’Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.) registered 41 digs in the two contests for Curry, including 27 digs in the opening match victory over Massachusetts Maritime by game scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-12 and 25-14 that gave the Colonels their first-ever victory in their inaugural season as a varsity program.  Freshman Jessica Crugnale (North Reading, Mass.) added 10 kills for Curry in the opening match win over the Buccaneers and 12 digs in the second match setback to Wentworth, while sophomore Kaitlyn Poirier (Acushnet, Mass.) notched 21 set assists in the first match triumph for the Colonels.

Senior Victoria Presutti (Marshfield, Mass.) collected nine kills and seven digs on the day for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received eight kills from sophomore Suzanne Marino (Kings Park, N.Y.) and five kills each from sophomores Alex Burgess-Chrost (Leominster, Mass.) and Laura Basile (Cambridge, Mass.).  Senior Allison Condino (Fitchburg, Mass.) chipped in with 25 set assists for the Buccaneers as well on the day.

Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until next Saturday morning when the Buccaneers close out the 2010 season by heading to Bridgewater, Mass. to participate in the Bridgewater State Halloween Quad along with Framingham State and Worcester State beginning at 11:00 a.m.  Curry and Wentworth will meet again on Thursday evening in a non-league match in Milton, Mass. that begins at 7:00 p.m. (Match recaps coutesy of Mass.
