Women's Tennis Blanked By St. Scholastica

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – St. Scholastica breezed to a 9-0 non-conference victory over Curry College on Wednesday morning at Oak Street Park. The Saints improved to 8-4 overall on the season with the victory while the Colonels drop to 0-17.

St. Scholastica won eight of the nine sets played. Sara Wennerstrand (Baxter, Minn.) blanked sophomore Sidara Cash-Sortwell (South Portland, Maine) at No. 1 singles. Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn.) topped sophomore Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.) 6-3 and 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Taylor Hays (Altoona, Wis.) shut out sophomore Kelsie Merrill (Hope, Maine) 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 3. Serena Hutson (Meridian, Idaho) defeated sophomore Samantha Gilbert (Bedford, Mass.) 6-1 and 6-0. The match at number five singles went the distance. Sydney Vyskocil (Ashland, Wis.) took the first set from freshman Rachel Lawlor (Meriden, Conn.) 6-0. Lawlor responded and won the second set 6-1 and then Vyskocil captured the match with a 10-2 third set super tiebreak. With only five players, the Colonels forfeited the number six singles point and third doubles point.

Maria Valentini (Hibbing, Minn.) and Syd Holt (Crosslake, Minn.) teamed for a win at first doubles, Julia Ellefson (Rochester, Minn.) and Grace Paulsen (Virginia, Minn.) won at No.  2 and Hays and Hutson won by default at No. 3 doubles.

Curry closes out its Spring Break trip in Florida on Thursday, March 14 against Ursinius at 8:00 a.m. The match will take place at Oak Street Park.
