#4 Women's Tennis Falls 5-2 to #5 Gordon College in CCC Quarterfinals

MILTON, Mass. – The Fighting Scot's freshman Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) clinched the decisive fifth point as the #5 seed Gordon College women's tennis team upset the #4 seed Curry College in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Quarterfinals with a 5-2 score on Tuesday afternoon at the Big Nine Courts.

With the win the Scots improve to 9-6 overall and advance to the CCC Semi-final round.  Gordon will travel to Nichols College on Thursday, October 10 for a 2:00 p.m. match.  The Colonels fell to 8-6 overall in the loss.  Curry has two non-conference matches remaining in their season.  The teams' next match is on Monday, October 14 at home against Lesley in a 3:30 p.m. start.

In the opening doubles session, the Colonels earned their only two points of the match at the #1 and #2 positions.  At #1, seniors Emily Mongello (Plymouth, Mass.) and Lauren Chuha (Reading, Mass.) defeated freshmen Caroline Hall (Corona, Calif.) and Cindi Flynn (Sunset Beach, Calif.), 9-7.  In the #2 slot, sophomore Kimberly Love (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and senior Megan Mulrooney (South Boston, Mass.) knocked off sophomore Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and freshman Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.), 8-3.  In the final doubles flight, the Scots freshman Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) and senior Jessie Dupre (North Billerica, Mass.) proved to be too much for Curry seniors Devin Curley (Marshfield, Mass.) and Elizabeth Zarkades (Beverly, Mass.) as they posted an 8-4 victory.

Gordon needed to win four singles matches for the victory which they did at the #1, #3, #4 and #6 spots.  At #1, Hall took care of Mulrooney, 6-0, 6-1.  The Scots won back-to-back flights when at #3 Drescher earned a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over freshman Molly Louis (Guilford, Conn.) and at #4 Flynn conquered Chuha, 6-3, 7-5.  Needing just one more singles victory, Caron posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over freshman Kayla Prete (Orange, Conn.).
