Curry Wins 2011 Women's Grass Court Doubles at Tennis Hall of Fame

NEWPORT, R.I. - In only its second year competing at the Tennis Hall of Fame, Curry College women's tennis captured the team championship of the 2011 Women's Grass Court Doubles Tournament hosted by Salve Regina University at the historic courts of the Newport Casino.

The Colonels finished tied with the College of the Holy Cross with 12 points apiece, but Curry earned the title by virtue of its 2-0 head-to-head record against the Crusaders at the grass court event. Emmanuel College finished third with 10 points and had its Flight A pair of Taylor Dey and Alex Hadlock win its championship, 8-1, over the Curry pair of Allison Curtis and Emily Mongello.

Dey and Hadlock had to win a tiebreak versus Salve Regina's top pair in the quarterfinal round on the stadium court. In the semifinal, they rallied from down 4-6 to defeat Johnson & Wales University's top duo, Samantha Jo Burr and Andrea Sultan Campbell, 9-7.

At Flight B, Holy Cross pair of Carolyn Chandley and Emily Marr earned the championship when they defeated Assumption College's Abby Blaisdell and Erica Micciche (pronounced MITCH-eh-kay), 8-4, in the final.

Curry College alternated three different players in its Flight C bracket. Devin Curley and Elizabeth Zarkedes won a quarterfinal match, 8-6, over Johnson & Wales. Curley paired with Kathleen Rush for a 9-7 win over Assumption. In the Flight C final, Rush and Zarkedes clinched the team championship with a 9-8(7-2) win over Holy Cross tandem of Jessica DeSimone and Emma Rudnik.
