Women's Tennis Edged by Salem State, 5-4, in First Season Loss


Salem, Mass. – The Salem State University Lady Vikings won five of the six singles matches Thursday afternoon for an exciting come from behind victory over the Curry College Colonels 5-4 in a non conference match. With the win the Lady Vikings are now 2-0 on the season, and with their first loss of the season the Colonels drop to 5-1.

The Colonels swept all three of the doubles matches to go ahead 3-0 in the match.  The Colonels were led by Megan Mulrooney (South Boston, Mass.) and Lauren Chuha (Reading, Mass.) who teamed up in the No. 1 doubles to win 8-5.  Curry's Emily Mongello (Milton, Mass.) and teammate Kathleen Rush (Waterbury, Conn.) would take the victory 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles spot.  In the No. 3 doubles spot Elizabeth Zarkades (Beverly, Mass.) and Devin Curley (Marshfield, Mass.) won 8-3.

Facing a 3-0 deficit entering the singles matches the Lady Vikings would receive wins from Lauren Turenne (Reading, Mass.) in the No. 2 singles spot 8-4.  Patty Quartararo (Lexington, Mass.) with a score of 8-3 in the No. 3 singles spot.  Carly Muniz (Gloucester, Mass.) claimed victory in the No. 4 singles by a score of 8-4.  Melissa Govertsen (Billerica, Mass.) won in the No. 5 singles spot by a score of 8-3. Jess Spinale (Saugus, Mass.) won in the No. 6 singles spot by a score of 8-2.  Curry College won the No. 1 singles spot as Mulrooney eased to victory 8-0.

The Lady Vikings will look to take on North Shore rival Gordon College at home on Saturday September 17 at 1:00 pm.  Curry College will take on conference foe Salve Regina Wednesday September 21 in Newport, R.I. at 3:30 pm. (Recap Courtesy of Salem State Sports Information)
