Lima Nets Game-Winner in Double Overtime as Women's Soccer Defeats Maine Maritime, 3-2

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer fell to Curry College 3-2 in double overtime on Wednesday night, in non-conference action at Ritchie Field.

Early in the first half, Kaitlyn Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) broke away from her defender and challenged Mariner goalkeeper Maggie McConkey (Fryeburg, Maine), but McConkey made an impressive leaping save to deflect the ball with her fingertips.

Susana DeFrank (Temecula, Calif.) put the Mariners on the board in the 21st minute, when she dribbled past her defender following a throw in and snuck the ball past Curry's keeper Morgan Stott (Dartmouth, Mass.).

Just a few minutes later Emily Wyman (Brockton, Mass.) had a good opportunity for the Mariners but her hard shot was stopped by Stott, keeping it at 1-0 Mariners.

Samantha McGrath (Carver, Mass.) tied things up at 1-1 in the 31st minute, when her shot deflected off the hands of McConkey and into the bottom right corner of the net.

In the second half, Makayla Lewis (Purcellville, Va.) put the Mariners ahead 2-1 in the 49th minute, when she sliced a shot past Stott.

The Colonels answered back just minutes later when Lima tied things up at 2-2.

Both teams orchestrated scoring opportunities in the final 39 minutes of regulation, but neither team found the back of the net, sending the game into overtime.

In the first overtime period, the Colonels recorded two shots while the Mariners took one, but neither team could capitalize, sending the Mariners to their second double-overtime game of the season.

Lima grabbed the win for Curry in the 102nd minute, with her second goal of the game.

McConkey recorded six saves in net, while Stott ended the evening with four saves in the victory.  Stott earned her 10th win on the season turning away four shots.

Maine Maritime (4-6-1) returns to action on Saturday, October 10 when they host North Atlantic Conference rival Husson University at 1:00 p.m. on Ritchie Field.  Curry (10-2) returns to action also on Saturday when they host Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Endicott College at 11:00 a.m.  (Game Recap Courtesy of Maine Maritime Sports Information)
