Women's Lacrosse Wins on Last Minute Goal

Newton, MA – The Curry Colonels defeated the UMass Boston beacons in a women's lacrosse match on Saturday by a final score of 11-10. It is the Colonels second straight win to move them to 2-2 on the season, while the Beacons are now 0-3.

The Beacons struck first about four minutes into the game, and that is how it stayed until the literal last second of the quarter. Grayson Goolgasian made that final second count though, scoring an unassisted goal with a lone second left in the quarter. After another beacons goal early in the second, Goolgasian struck again to tie things up. The Colonels took their first lead of the game with six minutes left in the half on a Natalie Keenan goal. After UMB tied things up a minute later, it was Goolgasian who gave the lead back to Curry. Casey Conneely then put the Colonels up 5-3 with 20 seconds left in the half, and that's where things stood at the break.

For the third straight quarter the Beacons struck first, scoring the first two goals of the second half to tie things up at five. But Curry answered with four straight goals from four different scorers in Conneely, Ava Doyle, Keenan, and Ellie Hardman. After UMB got one back, it was 9-6 after three. The Beacons again scored first in the fourth with two straight goals, but another Goolgasian goal stabilized things. But it was just a minute later that the Beacons scored again, drawing to within just one at 10-9. After six minutes of scoreless play, UMB tied things up at 10 with 90 seconds remaining. But a green card on the Beacons put the Colonels up a player, and it was Goolgasian who made them pay, scoring the game winning goal with 46 seconds remaining.

Along with her five goals, Goolgasian added an assist, and a team high four caused turnovers. She also was tied for the team lead with three ground balls along with Conneely and Shannon Nagy. Keenan led the team with four draw controls. Zoe Ratcliffe picked up the win in net with eight saves.

Up next – The Colonels will make it three straight when they travel to Vermont State Castleton on Tuesday. That game will take place at 7pm.
