Women's Lacrosse Opens Season by Defeating Dean

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's lacrosse team opened its 2023 season in style on Wednesday afternoon, knocking off Dean College 16-7 in non-conference action at Walter M. Katz Field.

With the victory, Curry opens its season with a mark of 1-0 overall. 

The teams played a tightly contested opening quarter, which came to a close with the Colonels ahead by a score of 4-3. Sophomore Grayson Goolgasian (Johnston, R.I.) scored Curry's first goal of the season in the period, followed by a marker from Ellie Hardman (Hanover, Mass.) and back-to-back tallies from Chloe Chevrier (West Suffield, Conn.) to give the Colonels the early lead.

Curry began to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs by a margin of 6-2 to take a 10-5 advantage into the half. Chevrier netted three goals in the quarter, with Goolgasian finishing her hat trick with a pair of tallies. Freshman Ava Doyle (Lynnfield, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal for the Colonels in the frame.

Goolgasian, Chevrier, and sophomore Natalie Keenan (Haverhill, Mass.) all notched single goals in the third quarter as the Colonels took a commanding 13-7 lead into the fourth. 

Sophomore netminder Vivi Helquist (Proctor, Minn.) pitched a shutout in the fourth quarter, while Chevrier netted a pair of goals and Hardman found the back of the net for the second time of the day to close out Curry's season-opening victory. 

Chevrier finished the afternoon with eight goals in the win, while Goolgasian tallied four goals.

Helquist earned her first collegiate win with a 10-save effort. Four of her 10 stops came in the fourth quarter.

Next up for the Colonels, they will play their first road game of the season on Saturday with a trip to UMass Dartmouth, slated for 12 p.m.
