Knowlton's Seven Goals Propels Curry past Worcester State

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's lacrosse team defeated Worcester State at Walter M. Katz Field on Thursday night, 17-15. With the win the Colonels improve to 5-6 overall while the Lancers fall to 6-2 on the season.

Sophomore midfielder Malorie Knowlton recorded a game-high seven goals for the Colonels. Sophomore midfielder Kelly Parker provided four goals and two assists while sophomore defender Abby Carnevale and sophomore attack Lauren Carroll each added two goals for the Colonels. Junior defender Alexis Cran led all players with four groundballs; five caused turnovers and a game-high 11 draw controls.

Worcester State was led by junior attack Kalia Chase, who scored five goals for the Lancers. Sophomore attack Alaina Martin added three goals and an assist for four points on the night.

Worcester jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first seven minutes of the game with goals from Martin and junior midfielder Jackie Connors. Curry responded with three goals one each from Knowlton, Carroll and Parker to go ahead 3-2. With just nine minutes left in the half the Lancers regained the lead after a tally from freshman midfielder Alexis Vecchiarelli.  The Colonels however responded with three unanswered, two from Parker and one from Carnevale. Sophomore midfielder Angelina Sutherland ended the half netting a goal for the Lancers to cut the Colonels advantage to 7-6 heading into halftime.

Worcester State started off the frame tallying three goals, one from Sutherland and two from Chase with only four minutes off the clock for a two-goal advantage. Curry responded with two goals one from Knowlton and one from Cran to tie the game fat 9-9, the seventh tie in the match. Both squads traded over the next six minutes for an 11-11 score with 18 minutes remaining on the clock. The Lancers again would go ahead by two off nets from Martin and senior attack Molly Kilday but back-to-back tallies by the Colonels from Parker and Knowlton tied the game at 13-13. With six minutes remaining, Chase gave Worcester a one goal advantage. Curry however fought hard and reeled off four goals in the final minutes to get there fifth win of the season.

The Colonels senior goalkeeper Christina Wallis recorded 11 saves for her fifth win of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Krissy Pessa recorded nine saves in the loss for the Lancers.

Curry is next in action when they host Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Gordon on Wednesday, April 8 at 6:00 p.m. Worcester State will host Salem State in conference play Saturday, April 4 in a 1:00 p.m. start time.
