Women's Lacrosse Falls to Visiting Gordon College, 14-7

MILTON, Mass. – In a conference match-up on Tuesday evening, Curry College lost to visiting Gordon College, 14-7.  With the win the Fighting Scots improve to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.  The Colonels fell to 7-3 overall, and 0-2 in the CCC. 

For Curry, senior Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.) led her team with four points on four goals.  Gordon’s junior Anna Blomberg (Simsbury, Conn.) led her team with nine points on seven goals and two assists. 

The Colonels juniors Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.), Kaitlin Cloutier (Montpelier, Vt.) and Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) each chipped in with one.  Brickey and Cloutier and freshman Emma Bolton (Saddle River, N.J.) helped with an assist.  The Fighting Scots got tallies from four other players.  Freshman Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) netted three and assisted on one.  Freshman Jessie Castelline (Concord, Mass.) had a solid night with four points on two goals and two assists.  Junior Jane Dietrich (West Hartford, Conn.) had two points on one goal and an assist and sophomore Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) netted a goal.

Earning the win in the cage for Gordon was junior keeper Danielle Maguire (Braintree, Mass.), who made 11 saves.  Curry’s sophomore netminder Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.) made nine stops in the loss. 

The Scots jumped out to an early lead just 42 seconds into the contest when Castelline received a pass from Dietrich.  The Colonels answered back minutes later off an unassisted goal by Bottary.  Over the next two minutes the teams traded scores.  Bloomburg fired first while Carey retaliated with her lone net of the night.  Gordon took back the lead after Bloomburg and Grinnell each tallied one 23 seconds apart from each other.  Bottary cut the deficit to one with 11:07 showing on the clock.  At 6:17 Grinnell put her team up 5-3 but two back-to-back goals by Curry’s Brickey and Bottary sent the squads into the break tied at five.
 
The second half saw the Scots outscore the Colonels 9-2.  Gordon came out strong netting the first six scores in the opening 10 minutes.  Curry called a time out to spark some Colonel action and Cloutier was able to earn her team’s sixth goal on the night.  Gordon however did not back down as they went on another scoring frenzy tallying the next three for a final 14.  Bottary earned her third of the game and the team’s seventh and final with 1:45 remaining to play.  Time ran out and the Scots got the 14-7 victory.

Curry returns to play on Saturday, April 6 as they travel for a CCC duel with Roger Williams at 1:00 p.m. Gordon will travel to non-conference opponent Wheaton College on Tuesday, April 4 for a 4:00 p.m. game start.
