Women's Lacrosse Fall to Gordon, 19-8, in Final Game of the Season

WENHAM, Mass.— The Fighting Scots closed out their regular season with gusto tonight at the Brigham Athletic Complex, celebrating Senior Day with a convincing 19-8 win over the visiting Colonels of Curry College to improve to 12-3 overall, 5-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play. The loss closes out Curry's season at 7-10 overall, 0-7 in league action.

Jane Dietrich (So./West Hartford, Conn.) and Stephanie Fitzgerald (So./Groveland, Mass.) paced the win for Gordon with five goals each, while Anna Blomberg (So/Simsbury, Conn.) contributed four goals, one assist, and eight draw controls on the night and Jordan Alexander (Sr./Portland, Maine) pitched in two goals, three assists. Rounding out the scoring were Jocie Knaus (Sr./Kensington, Conn.) and Kelly Linehan (So./White Plains, N.Y.), who combined for three goals in the victory. Netminder Danielle Maguire (So./Braintree, Mass.) earned the win with six saves aided by the defensive efforts of Hala Coker (Sr./East Falmouth, Mass.), Parisa Hassanzadeh (Sr./Winchester, Mass.), and Krysti Leach (Sr./Naples, Maine).

Curry's effort was led by Ana Bottary (Jr./Hull, Mass.) with three goals and an assist, while Deanna Monfredo (So./West Islip, N.Y.) and Mel Brickey (So./Chelmsford, Mass.) chipped in two apiece. Maria Lynch (Sr./Billerica, Mass.) also had a standout night for the Colonels in the cage, rejecting 13 of the Scots' attempts on goal in 60 minutes of work.

The Scots took control of the lead in the early-going and never looked back, netting four unanswered goals over the opening 12 minutes before Curry's Bottary buried her first of the night on a free position to put her team on the board. Then, Dietrich and Fitzgerald responded shortly thereafter with a pair of goals just 13 seconds apart to make it a 6-1 game. And though Brickey converted a solo effort at 13:24, the Scots went on 7-2 run over the remainder of the half to establish a considerable 13-4 advantage at the break.

Determined the put the game out of reach, the Scots posted another offensive flurry to open the second stanza behind two goals each from Fitzgerald and Blomberg and a single tally from Dietrich to make it 18-4 with 13 minutes to play. Though Curry would outscore the Scots 4-1 down the stretch, the lead was too much to overcome in the waning minutes as the Scots went on to the eventual 11-goal win.

Having earned the third seed for the upcoming CCC tournament, the Scots will host sixth-seeded Western New England on Saturday, April 28. (Game Recap Courtesy of Gordon Sports Information)
