Women's Lacrosse Edged by Host Western New England, 14-13

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior midfielder Megan Doyle (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) scored six goals, including the game-winner with 14 seconds, as the Western New England women’s lacrosse team ended its regular season with a thrilling 14-13 victory over Curry Saturday afternoon (Apr. 21).

Senior midfielder Katie Toomy (Northborough, Mass.) assisted on the winning play as the Golden Bears snapped a four-game slid to improve to 6-11 overall and 3-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Toomy also had a six-point performance after finishing with three goals and three goals along with nine draw controls and three ground balls.

Freshman goalie Emily Castleman (Wilbraham, Mass.) contributed to the victory by making a clutch save on a point-blank shot by sophomore midfielder Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) with 43 seconds left. Carey led the Colonels with six goals and an assist.

Neither team had more than a two-goal lead in the opening half as Curry went into halftime leading by the score of 7-6.

Haley had two goals in a 4-0 run as the Colonels took a 12-9 advantage with 17:40 to play.

Toomy and Doyle netted goals before sophomore defender Julia Bernas (Framingham, Mass.) tied the contest with 6:44 remaining. Doyle put the Golden Bears ahead at the 5:53 mark before Haley scored again to tie the game at 13-13 with 4:40 left.

That set the stage for Castleman’s big save and Doyle’s last goal in the final minute. Castleman, who was pulled in the first half and returned in the second stanza, allowed seven goals and compiled six saves. Freshman Melissa Perry (Somers, Conn.) made three stops and permitted six goals.

Junior attacker Julianne Green (Brightwaters, N.Y.) contributed two goals while freshman midfielder Jessica Scannapieco (Blue Bell, PA) had a goal and two assists. Senior defender Veronica Miano (Southington, Conn.) had four caused turnovers.

For Curry, senior defender Heather Breton (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and sophomore attacker Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) notched two goals apiece. Junior attacker Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.) chipped-in with a goal and two assists.

Sophomore defender Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) had four draw controls including one goal. Senior goalie Maria Lynch (Billerica, Mass.) had nice showing by making 20 saves.

The Colonels are now 7-9 overall and 0-6 in conference play.  They return to action on Tuesday, April 24 in their final game of the season against CCC opponent Gordon College in a 7:00 p.m. game start.  (Game Recap Courtesy of Western New England University Sports Information)
