Women's Lacrosse Upset by Salve Regina, 15-10

MILTON, Mass.- Curry College lost to Salve Regina University, 15-10 on Tuesday in Milton, Mass.  With the loss, the Colonels even their overall record to 7-7 overall and fell to 0-5 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.  The Seahawks improve to 10-4 overall and 3-3 in the CCC.

Salve Regina started the scoring just 53 seconds into the opening frame.  Junior Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.) netted her first on the day on an unassisted goal.  Curry responded with two of their own just 13 seconds apart.  Junior Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.) won the draw and sent a long pass to an open sophomore Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) who shot the ball past the Seahawks sophomore goaltender Josie O’Reilly (Middletown, R.I.).  Salve Regina scored back-to-back goals both by junior Jennifer Jones (Basking Ridge, N.J.) 38 seconds apart.  Her first was unassisted the next off an assist from sophomore Grace Kelly (Auburn, Mass.).  Carey tied the game off another assist from Bottary, but Salve regained the lead just less than two minutes later off a goal by Kelly.  The Colonels went on a three goal scoring spree to take a two goal lead.  Bottary and sophomores Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) each had a tally.  Both teams exchanged goals over the next 1:10 minutes with senior Sarah Livingston (Westford, Mass.) earning her first and Brickey her second.  Curry still had a two goal lead, but Salve scored three goals over just 1:30 to take an 8-7 advantage over the Colonels into half-time.  Burke, Jones and Livingston contributed on the Seahawk run. 

Salve held a slight advantage in shots after the first outshooting Curry 18-17.  The Colonels held the advantage in draw controls 9-7. 

Livingston came out and scored the first goal of the second stanza off an assist by sophomore Kristie Cox (Nashua, N.H.) to extend their lead to two.  Carey cut the Seahawk lead back to one off a pass from sophomore Kaitlin Cloutier (Montpelier, Vt.).  Salve however tallied the next three goals that Curry could not recover from.  Cox, Kelly and freshman Gina Tortorici (Deer Park, N.Y.) each chipped in with a goal.  Carey and Cloutier each netted one more for the Colonels, but it wasn’t enough as the Seahawks would get three more to end the game, the last with just one second remaining on the board.  Tortorici, Jones and sophomore Karley Malenczak (Sayville, N.Y.) finished the scoring for Salve.

The Seahawks outshot the Colonels just 31-30.  Curry however dominated in draw controls winning 18 of 27. 

Bottary led the team in points with two goals and four assists. Carey led the team in goals with four.  Brickey was solid on defense winning eight draw controls, causing four turnovers, scooping up three groundballs and contributing to two goals. 

Jones led the Seahawks scoring four goals in the match. Livingston and Kelly each finished with three points with Kelly netting two goals and chipping in with an assist and Livingston tallying three goals.   Livingston also led her team with three draw controls.

Senior goaltender Maria Lynch (Billerica, Mass.) played in net for the Colonels and finished with nine saves in the loss.  In net for Salve was O’Reilly who made 18 saves for the win.

The Colonels will travel to New England College on Thursday, April 19 for a 7:00 p.m. game time. Salve will host the University of New England on April 21 for a 12:00 p.m. start.
