Monfredo Scores Game-Winner to Lift Women's Lacrosse Past Emerson College, 8-7

MILTON, Mass. – Sophomore Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) received a pass from sophomore Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) with just 38 seconds left to play to give Curry an 8-7 win over the visiting Emerson College in women’s lacrosse action on Thursday evening at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the win the Colonels improve to 7-5, the Lions even their record at 5-5.

The Colonels scored the first goal just one minute into the game when sophomore Kaitlin Cloutier (Mountpelier, Vt.) had a fast break to net to beat the Lions junior Emily Saeger (Center Valley, Pa.).  Emerson scored the next two to take a one goal lead.  Sophomores Alex Corrado (Sammamich, Wa.) and Kanika Misra (Potsdam, N.Y) each had unassisted tallies.  It took six minutes until Curry was able to tie the score when freshman Caitlin Corkery (Arlington, Mass.) scored her first of the night off a pass from junior
Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.).  39 seconds later Emerson regained their lead on another unassisted goal by Misra.  The Colonels went on to net the next three markers, two by Monfredo and one by Brickey.  Junior Sophia Mitropoulos (Lebanon, Maine) added the last goal of the half when she beat a Colonel defender and unleashed a shot over senior goaltender Maria Lynch (Billerica, Mass.).

Curry outshot Emerson 16-7 and held a slight advantage in draws, 6-5, in the first half.

Only six goals were scored in final frame with both teams scoring three apiece.  The Colonels wasted no time scoring two goals just six seconds apart to begin the half.  Sophomore Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) earned her only goal of the night when she received a pass in front of the net off the stick of sophomore Bridget McDonald (Longmeadow, Mass.).  Carey won the next draw and sent a long pass to Brickey for her second on the night.  Neither team could score over the next 21 minutes as both goaltenders were playing solid between the pipes.  It looked as if Curry was going to hold on to a 6-5 win, but Emerson went on a three-goal scoring spree in the last seven minutes to tie the game.  The last goal was scored with just 2:11 left to play.  Senior Kayla Dowd (Avon, Conn.) netted her only goal of the night off a free-position shot and sophomore Mackenzie Johnson (Pasadena, Md.) tallied back-to-back scores including the tying goal.  The next draw was won by the Lions but junior Kim Heintzelman (Marietta, Ga.) caused a turnover for the Colonels which led to the eventual game-winning goal.  Brickey was fouled right over the 35 yard-line and found a wide open Monfredo in front of the net who received the pass and shot the ball low past Saeger for the win.

Curry was led by Monfredo and Brickey who each had three points.  Monfredo scored three goals and Brickey had two goals and chipped in for an assist.  Emerson was led by Johnson and Misra who each netted two goals.

Final shots were 29-13 in favor of Curry and both teams were even in draw controls with nine each.

Lynch collected six stops in 60:00 minutes in net for the Colonels. Saeger made 12 saves in 60:00 minutes in goal for the Lions.

Curry will host Nichols College on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match-up against Nichols College.
Emerson will be back in action on Tuesday as it hosts Wheelock College at 6:00 p.m.
