Women's Lacrosse Gets Goals From 14 Different Players to Defeat Wheelock, 26-3

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior attack Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.) and sophomore defender Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) each tallied eight points, to lead the Curry College women’s lacrosse team over host Wheelock College this afternoon, 26-3, at Winsor Field in Boston, Mass.  The Colonels improve to 4-4 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 0-7.
 
Curry owned a commanding 40-13 shot advantage and scored the first 19 goals of the contest, including all 18 scores in the first half.
 
Bottary netted five of the Colonels’ first 16 goals and chipped in with two of her three assists, while Brickey scored or assisted on seven of the visitors’ first 17 tallies.  Sophomore Haley Carey (New Milford, Conn.) earned five of her six points and sophomore defender Caitlyn Tobyne (Hamilton, Mass.) registered multiple goals in the first half with Carey finding the back of the net three times and Tobyne twice.  Freshman midfielder Maria Giuffrida (Leicester, Mass.) finished with the last goal of the frame for the Colonels. 
 
Sophomore attack Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) potted a goal just 1:36 in to the second half to increase the Curry advantage to 19-0, but Wheelock freshman attack Valerie Ferrante (Milford, Mass.) halted the scoring surge and put the home team on the board with her 13th goal of the season at the 25:05 mark.  Freshman midfielder Colby Lowell (Marshfield, MA) countered for the Colonels less than two minutes later, before sophomore midfielder Katie Gavin (Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.) answered just 52 seconds later for the Wildcats to cut the deficit to 20-2.  Senior defenders Michaela Powers (Falmouth, Mass.) and Heather Breton (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and freshman defender Samantha Robinson (Adams, Mass.) each broke into the scoring column over the next 13 minutes to give Curry a 23-2 cushion, but Gavin netted her second goal of the afternoon for Wheelock to make it 23-3 at the 9:08 mark of the second half.  Senior goalie Maria Lynch (Billerica, Mass.) began the match in net for the Colonels, but ended it by sandwiching a pair of goals around freshman attack Caitlin Corkery’s (Arlington, Mass.) second tally of the day to cap the scoring for both teams.
 
Brickey won three draw controls, caused turnovers and picked up three ground balls in addition to her four goals and four assists for Curry, while Bottary added three assists, three caused turnovers and three draw controls to her day.  Carey along with her three goals and three assists also had two groundballs and a career-high 10 draw controls.  Monfredo racked up four assists to go with her goal and three ground balls.  Sophomore attack Kelly Ethier (Merrimack, N.H.) finished with three points on a goal and two assists, while winning two draw controls.  Sophomore defender Bridget McDonald (Longmeadow, Mass.) also registered multiple points with a goal and an assist and picked up two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
 
Gavin led the Wildcats with two goals, for her team-leading 26th, on the year and seven draw controls to go with two ground balls, while Ferrante scooped up a pair of ground balls to go with her goal.  Sophomore defender Hayley Adamuska (Bethlehem, N.H.) and freshman midfielder Jessica Hersom (Sanford, Maine) each collected two ground balls.
 
Lynch stopped the only shot she faced in 10:43 of action in net for the Colonels, before yielding to freshman goalie Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.), who stopped two shots in the first half and three in the second in the final 49:17 of play.  Sophomore Monica Bettle (Pembroke, Mass.) turned away five of 23 shots in the first half for Wheelock and senior Alanna Pihl (Franonia, N.H.) knocked down one of nine shots she faced in the second half to go with three ground balls and a caused turnover.
 
The Wildcats will be in action again on Tuesday, April 3 when they travel to Providence, RI to take on Rhode Island College at 4:00 p.m., while Curry hosts Daniel Webster College on April 5 at 6:00 p.m. (Game Recap Courtesy of Wheelock College Sports Information)
