Women's Lacrosse Absorbs 18-7 Loss to Visiting Wheaton College

MILTON, Mass.- Wheaton College defeated Curry College, 18-7 on Thursday night in Milton, Mass.  With the loss, the Colonels fell to 3-2 overall.  The Lyons advanced to 3-2 overall.

The Lyons came out strong to start the game scoring the first two goals 20 seconds apart from each other.  The Colonels got on the board 18 seconds later, but Wheaton scored the next four goals to go up 6-1.  Curry netted their second in the half at the 19:01 mark, but Wheaton went on another four goal scoring spree.  The Colonels would get just one more tally before the half but Wheaton put in the last three to head into the break with a demanding 13-3 lead. 

Curry played a much stronger second half, scoring the first goal and the last two of the game.  Wheaton was held to just five in the frame, but was able to hold on to the 18-7 victory.

Junior Ana Bottary (Hull, Mass.) and sophomore Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) each contributed with four points on three goals and an assist. Senior Heather Breton (Wolfeboro, N.H.) was also credited with a goal.

Wheaton was lead by sophomore Charlotte DeSantis (Darien, Conn.) who had a season high nine points on eight goals and one assist.  The Lyons leading goal scorer finished the night with four points on three goals and chipped in for one assist.  Junior Elizabeth Hickey (Weymouth, Mass.) had two goals while seniors Sydney Ferguson (Jamestown, R,I), Katie Powers (Ashburnham, Mass.), Sabrina Fiori (Newton, Mass.), junior Kristen Palmer (East Dorset, Vt.) and freshman Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass.) each contributed with one goal apiece. 

Shots were even with both teams having 27.  The Lyons had 18 in the first half and nine in the second.  The Colonels had nine in the first and 18 in the second.  The teams were also even on groundballs, both picking up 12.  Curry however held the advantage in draw controls with 16 while Wheaton had 11.  

Curry's senior goalkeeper, Maria Lynch (Billerica, Mass.) finished with nine saves, allowing 17 goals in 59:30 minutes of play. Junior Emily LeBlanc (Abington, Mass.) allowed one goal in 30 seconds in net.  The Lyons freshman goaltender Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass.) played solid between the pipes, making 14 saves and allowing just seven goals in 60:00 minutes of play for the win. 

The Colonels will travel to the University of New England in their conference opener on Saturday, March 24 for a 1:00 p.m. game time. Wheaton will travel to Springfield College on March 24 for their first conference game in a 12:00 p.m. start.
