Women's Ice Hockey Sees Run End in Championship Game

West Springfield, MA – The Curry Women's Hockey team battled the Western New England Golden Bears at the Olympia Ice Center on Saturday in the CCC Championship game. The Golden Bears went home with the win, winning 5-3. The  Colonels end their season at 11-12-5, while WNE will head to the NCAA Tournament with a 17-7-3 record.

The Colonels controlled the pace in the first, attempting 31 shots, with 14 on goal compared to seven and five for WNE. The Colonels also controlled the faceoff circle in the first, winning 14 of 20. But the Colonels were unable to break through until 12 minutes in when Emily Bisbee scored just her second goal of the season. That goal was assisted by Danielle Reid and Ali Olorenshaw. Bisbee would do it again just three minutes later on a wicked wrister, again assisted by Reid and Olorenshaw. But just a minute after that put the Colonels up 2-0, the Golden Bears cut the lead in half on an Alyssa Murphy goal. That would be all of the scoring, as the Colonels led 2-1 at the first intermission.

The second period again saw the Colonels dominate possession early. They extended their lead to 3-1 seven and a half minutes into the period, off another Olorenshaw assist, this time on a Hannah Berkowitz goal off a deflection. But the Golden Bears would respond immediately scoring just seconds into a power play just over a minute after the Curry goal. That goal was scored by Abby Hay, drawing the Golden Bears back within one. The penalty and the resulting goal seemed to tilt the ice, as WNE would begin to control the puck more in the Curry end. With just under four minutes remaining in the period the Colonels would commit another penalty, and just like the first power play, the Golden Bears scored just seconds into this one, this time on a one timer by Jenna Lynch. This sent the game into the third period all knotted up at three. The Golden Bears fired 33 shots in the period, putting 17 on net, while the Colonels had 20 and seven. The faceoff circle also proved to be much more even, as Curry held just a slight 14-12 advantage in the period.

A critical moment occurred with 14 minutes remaining in the game when the Colonels were called for a five minute boarding penalty, giving the Golden Bears an extended power play. The Colonels would stop the first six shot attempts of the power play, but the seventh trickled by two minutes into the penalty, giving the Golden Bears a 4-3 lead. They would add another a minute later to make it 5-3, their fourth power play goal of the game. Those goals were scored by Zoe Galanoudis and Kelly Yorkey. The Colonels would continue to pepper the WNE goalie, but were unable to find the back of the net again.

Curry goalie Soleil Archambeault made 30 saves on the night. The Colonels won the faceoff battle 40-26, with Hannah Berkowitz winning 16 of the 23 she took.
