Women's Ice Hockey Slipped Up by Johnson & Wales

CANTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's ice hockey team couldn't hold onto a two-goal advantage on Saturday evening, falling to Johnson & Wales University by a final of 3-2 in the program's first ever home game at the Canton Ice House.

With the loss, Curry moves to 0-2-0 overall on the young season.

Prior to the game, Curry College celebrated the women's ice hockey program's first ever home game with a ceremonial puck drop. Curry College President Kenneth Quigley and Director of Athletics Vinnie Eruzione for the opening faceoff. Kenzie Fogarty (Roseville, Calif.), the program's first-ever committed player, joined Quigley, Eruzione, and JWU's Koryn Russell at center ice.

The teams played nearly the entire first period deadlocked, until Curry College freshman Paige Rodriguez (Eau Claire, Wis.) netted her first collegiate goal. The rookie made a centering pass toward classmate Asher Printzen (Las Vegas, Nev.), but the pass ricocheted off a defenseman's skate and past the JWU netminder for the game's first goal with just 52 seconds remaining in the first. Hannah Berkowitz (Mattawan, Mich.) and Sammy Lassman (Parkland, Fla.) were credited with assists on the tally.

Early in the second, Curry took advantage of a defensive zone turnover to stretch their lead to two. Grayson Goolgasian (Johnston, R.I.) deflected a JWU exit pass right onto the tape of Printzen, who made a pretty move before depositing the puck five-hole for her first collegiate goal, a shorthanded goal.

Johnson & Wales responded however with three goals in a span of 5:21 in the late stages of the second period to come from behind to take the lead.

Curry outshot Johnson & Wales 11-5 in the third and final period, but were unable to find an equalizer as JWU's Sofia Tamayo stood tall. Tamayo earned the game's first star, making 30 saves on 32 shots for the visitors. In her first collegiate start, Curry's Ella Campbell (Farmington Hills, Mich.) made 18 saves on 21 shots, taking the loss.

Curry will be back on the ice on Friday night for a 7 p.m. puck drop against Western New England at the Canton Ice House.
