Women’s Basketball Flies High Over Hawks

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College enjoyed a 59-56 victory over Hartford University Saturday afternoon in a collegiate women's basketball game at Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.

With the victory, the Colonels improve to an overall record of 5-9 while remaining 0-6 in conference play.

Four different Colonel players knocked down three-pointers in the first quarter to shoot Curry out to a slim 17-15 lead by the end of the period. The Colonels continued to shoot well heading into the second, hitting their first four field goals of the quarter, including three layups by freshman Sophie Hilbrunner (Waltham, Mass.), who was a perfect 6-for-6, including two triples, to finish with 14 points heading into halftime.

The Hawks battled back into the contest, taking a 56-55 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the game. With under ten seconds left in the contest, the Colonels ran an inbounds play from the sideline, with Sophomore Lauren Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) finding Hilbrunner cutting to the hoop to score the game-winning basket.

Hilbrunner led all players, scoring a career-high 24 points while shooting 10-for-13 from the field, including going 3-for-3 from behind the three-point line. She also led all players with 13 rebounds and four blocks. Dunn was another major contributor, finishing with 16 points while going a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.

Curry College jumps back into action on Wednesday, January 17th, in a road matchup against the University of New England.
